In this recent painting, based on Luke 10:38-42, Nathan Greene portrays Jesus teaching at the home of Martha and Mary. Jesus would later restore the life of their brother Lazarus. Martha was concerned about being a good hostess, conscious of her duties.
Christ's teachings spoke to the heart, cutting through the religious formalism of the times. Mary sits at His feet, listening to the words of life. "But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her." The warmth of Jesus' words and the concern for His friends comes through in this scene. The artist has paid particular attention to the pottery and details in the period clothing of the two sisters. At Jesus' Feet is one of Greene's finest paintings, rich in detail and emotion. It is a beautiful addition and conversation piece for any home.
